Design for a bistro café & meze bar in Athens, Greece
Located in Athens, this all day bar and restaurant welcomes guests from early morning through to late evening, serving speciality coffee, signature cocktails, and small plates throughout the day. The project unifies two ground-floor units within a typical Athenian polykatoikia*.
Taking inspiration from the traditional neighbourhoods near the city centre - where ground floor cafés act as social anchors - the design both respects and revitalises this heritage. Externally, the old plaster and accumulated paint layers were removed to reveal and open up the façade, emphasising the building’s corner presence. A coherent colour scheme connects the upper floor with the rest of the structure, enhancing the artisanal details and restoring clarity to the original architectural envelope.
Internally, the space has been conceived to transition seamlessly between daytime and evening use. A low bar station functions as a coffee bar in the morning and transforms into a cocktail bar at night. The preserved polished mosaic floors add texture and character to the interior. Bold colour accents introduce energy and reflect the diverse flow of people throughout the day. A triangular communal table offers flexibility, accommodating larger groups or separating into two distinct seating zones when required.
*Polykatoikia refers to a post-war urban housing typology in Athens, characterised by multi-storey concrete apartment blocks with functional, minimalist aesthetics. Developed through a land-for-apartment exchange system, it was central to the city’s rapid urban expansion in the mid 20th century. Ground floors typically housed shops, artisans, or small workshops, while upper levels were occupied by apartments.

Ένα all day Café Bar στο ισόγειο μιας Αθηναϊκής πολυκατοικίας
Για τις ανάγκες στέγασης ενός νέου all day café bar στο κέντρο της Αθήνας, το έργο ενοποιεί δύο ισόγειες ιδιοκτησίες μιας τυπικής αθηναϊκής πολυκατοικίας. Η παρέμβαση αντλεί αναφορές από την πολυεπίπεδη καθημερινότητα της πόλης, όπου τα καφέ και τα ισόγεια καταστήματα λειτουργούν ως σημεία συνάντησης και αστικής ζωής.
Προκειμένου να αναδείξουμε το αρχικό κέλυφος και να ενισχύσουμε τη γωνία του δρόμου, απομακρύναμε από τις εξωτερικές όψεις τις παρεμβάσεις προηγούμενων επιχειρήσεων. Οι εξωτερικές όψεις βάφονται στην ίδια απόχρωση με το υπόλοιπο κτίριο για ένα ενιαίο αποτέλεσμα.
Το καφέ οργανώνεται ως ένας ευέλικτος χώρος που μεταβαίνει ομαλά από την ημερήσια στη βραδινή λειτουργία. Το μπαρ σχεδιάζεται ώστε να λειτουργεί ως coffee station το πρωί και cocktail bar το βράδυ. Ο χώρος αφηγείται την ιστορία του μέσα από τα υλικά, τα μωσαϊκά δάπεδα επισκευάζονται, ενώ οι ζωντανές χρωματικές παρεμβάσεις εισάγουν ενέργεια και αντικατοπτρίζουν την εναλλαγή των χρηστών.
Σημείο αναφοράς του έργου αποτελεί το τριγωνικό κοινόχρηστο τραπέζι που σχεδιάστηκε και κατασκευάστηκε για το έργο. Η γεωμετρία του προσφέρει ευελιξία στο χώρο, φιλοξενώντας μεγάλες παρέες ή διαχωριζόμενο δημιουργεί επιμέρους ζώνες καθιστικού.
Μέσα από μια σύγχρονη αρχιτεκτονική γλώσσα, το κτίριο αποκτά εκ νέου παρουσία και ρόλο στην καθημερινή ζωή της πόλης, με το ισόγειο της αθηναϊκής πολυκατοικίας ως ανοιχτό και ζωντανό πεδίο κοινωνικής αλληλεπίδρασης.
A modular triangular table designed for flexibility: used as a single large surface for communal dining, or separated into two smaller triangles to accommodate independent groups.
